Why? why

22.02.13

Letter to the Editor

Why? Why has the Newman government cut their health budget by almost $3 Billion resulting in at least 500 lost jobs in North Queensland? I have looked at the Queensland government Service Delivery Statement 2012-2013 and the statement of health funding from the federal government which has increasing spending over the next 4 years.

I understand that the Newman government is trying to balance their budget; however health services, jobs and people should come first. Health is the most important function of government because if you lose your health you lose almost everything.

Not for the first time

18.02.13

Letter to the Editor

Not for the first time I find myself astounded by the dysfunction of the Newman LNP Government, last Friday the government lost its third Minister inside 12 months, and also a hand-picked Director-General chosen by the Premier himself. What is going on with this LNP government as they lurch from one political crisis to the next?

Queenslanders deserve much better than this shoddy lot who apparently are now trying to build personal kingdoms within the government. This is shades of the last LNP government under Borbidge which was a one term outfit. The LNP is obviously at war with itself behind the scenes, with former National Party members resenting the Liberal Party takeover and the establishment of their Liberal policies.

Given that this party and government are in an absolute shambles how on earth could we possibly vote for a member of this party to go into our federal parliament? If this State performance from the LNP is anything to go by we will be better off voting for the incumbent Labor government, federally, we certainly have seen the shambles that this party has delivered in Queensland in the past 11 months.

Shaun Newman

The plan to build 100 dams

14.02.13

The plan to build 100 dams from the LNP Coalition is more platitudes devoid of detail or purpose. The vague thought bubble with costing at approximately $30 Billion is obviously a long term goal however from a party who already have a credibility problem with their existing budget costings of $10 Billion in deficit these “notions” do not hold water.

The most obvious piece of infrastructure that could and should be built is stage 2 of the Burdekin Falls Dam in North Queensland which would deliver much needed hydro base load power to North Queensland industry, and it was not even mentioned.

Another day another slap in the face for the people of North Queensland from a party that is so disorganized that the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. If the notion of developing the north is so important why is it not being done by private enterprise or is this simply a case of a political party doing the bidding of the ultra-rich? It seems very much like ordinary people are being asked to finance through public funds something that will make the private sector very rich without having to contribute start-up funds, a plan that will not deliver ordinary people anything in the national interest.

I have just discovered

05.02.13

Letter to the Editor

I have just discovered that if the LNP win this year’s federal election our family will lose the school kids bonus that we have recently received to help meet all the back to school expenses. Great that’s just what we need NOT!

For goodness sake the carbon tax is helping to encourage companies who pollute the air we breathe to switch to sustainable energy, more than 6,000 families in Townsville have already done this by installing solar energy, is it really too much to ask of polluting companies?. Apparently not only the carbon tax but the mining tax is also going to give big multi- national dollar mining companies more profit at our expense.

Ordinary families are struggling yet the LNP are concerned about the bottom line for multi-million dollar mining companies, there is something very wrong with the LNP thinking? It does not meet the Aussie “fair go” test.

I have to say

03.02.13

Letter to the Editor

I have to say that the way our friends at Bundaberg through to Mundubberra were handled by Premier Newman was very ordinary at best. Before the State election I suspected that having a Liberal Party Premier would be detrimental to regional and rural communities and so it has proven to be so in my humble opinion.

Most Queenslanders thought the Bligh government was a bit on the nose, and so it was, however this new crew has been found wanting on so many levels that it makes one baulk at the prospect of electing a federal LNP government. The federal LNP have already told us battlers that we will lose the school kids bonus that helps us educate our children, again one wonders what else we are likely to lose by electing a federal LNP government.

With the year after year climate disasters we in Queensland have witnessed in recent times the number one priority of our federal government needs to be to address climate change however the LNP have made it clear that they will outlaw the price on carbon, imagine the climatic circumstances that would arise from that foolish move. More cyclones and floods at a more severe level, makes me wonder if the LNP are seeing what is happening in front of them?

We as Australians need to keep moving forward, whereas the LNP will only lead us to ruin, in my humble opinion.

Shaun Newman
