Re ALP casualties

24.03.13

Letter to the Editor

Re “ ALP casualties mount after spill bid fails Townsville Bulletin 23.03.13.” There is a lot to say about this situation that perhaps cannot be contained in a simple letter, so I will attempt to explain my opinion of the basic points.

The Labor Party is supposed to represent ordinary everyday Australians however some in the party seem to believe it is their right to engage and/or disengage leaders at their whim. This collection of people is most commonly known as the NSW Right wing, this is the faction at the centre of ICAC investigations in that State.

I doubt very much that the Gillard government will suffer because of the loss of the likes of Chris Bowen and Martin Ferguson, there is now an opportunity for Prime Minister Gillard to reshuffle her front bench with new invigorated talent without the influence of the NSW Right, and there is plenty of said talent available.

The right wing faction is in large quantity made up of weak unions backing of people who are not prepared to fight for the welfare of the everyday Aussie, and they should not exist with a “Labor Party” as one texter to the Townsville Bulletin put it “Woo Hoo! That’s our PM… like a boss! Good try Crean (go join the Liberals, heard they’re hiring) good try Abbott (vote of no confidence failed) Now start weeding out the other “faceless” backstabbers and we’re on! Take notice people, we have a brilliant, fair and intelligent leader. Stop the whinging and pay attention. EF4819.”

This texter is implying, quite rightly in my opinion that the conservative right wing of the Labor Party is as dangerous to ordinary everyday Aussies as the Liberal National Party, as can be evidenced by the LNP ruination of Queensland.

Goodness me, now a first term

07.03.13

Letter to the Editor

Goodness me, now a “first term” serving LNP Premier has been knocked off his perch in Victoria “Bailieu forced out as Victorian premier, Townsville Bulletin 07.03.13” as headlines also feature “Mills survives as CLP leader” telling of the instability of the NT Liberal Party. Also we have questions being asked about police brutality in New South Wales leading to issues of competence of the NSW Police Minister; it seems that the LNP are in crisis wherever you look.

Here in Queensland, we have the elected government fighting among themselves with MPs defecting from the government, scandals with senior hand-picked public servants and governments Ministers leaving or being sacked, talk about stable government. We wanted so badly to rid ourselves of Bligh that we did not think ahead far enough to what the change would actually mean the huge rise to the cost of living to come for everyday Queenslanders will arrive if/when our LNP government follows its ideology to privatize everything it can lay its hands on. But wait, there’s more.

If we change federal governments again in September, we may yet be in for the rudest shock we have ever seen, with federal government services like Medicare sent back to privatization from whence it came. If you think it’s tough to survive now, just imagine how tough it will be if Tony Abbott becomes PM in charge of this rabble.

The looks on the faces

03.03.13

Letter to the Editor

The looks on the faces of three of the four pensioners’ photos pictured with the story “Waiting lists show system in decay TB 02.03.13” demonstrate the forlorn and frustrated nature of patients waiting for years for a public dentist.

I notice the Australian Dental Association Queensland president Bruce Newman said it was unacceptable to have people waiting as much as 15 years to see a dentist (more likely to be a relation of the Premier, than of myself) yet unsurprisingly his only solution was to urge Queensland Health Minister Lawrence Springborg to privatize Queensland’s dental services, no talk of lowering prices for people who are unable to afford them.

It seems that Bruce Newman and Campbell Newman may be in agreement, the one factor that does not change is that pensioners do not have the money to pay the absorbent charges that dentists demand. There is absolutely no hope for the future when we read stories like “Services on sale TB 02.03.13” that outlines the approach of Costello’s report (if this were a medical situation, I would be calling for a second opinion) that the Queensland government should sell education, health, housing, community support, transport and energy (Ergon) this of course is a conservatives dream, to flog off all services that the government provide to some of their very rich mates. Bligh quite rightly got the chop for privatizing the railway; this plan should be opposed strongly by the Queensland public who will be hit unceremoniously with the huge rise in the cost of living that would arise from such a move.

Unfortunately on the other side of the coin pensioners as I said do not have the money to pay for these services, when the prices rise as they always do when a government service is privatized. We shall be a mini USA, Also with all these services privatized there will be nothing left for a government to administer, and as such we could have no reason to continue to pay politicians.

It is worthwhile mentioning Louise Yates who was the third Case study, in “Waiting lists show system in decay” Louise had been a practicing neurophysiologist but none of us know when a disability may strike and alter our lives forever, it seems that people should no longer depend on Queensland government help, because once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.

Shaun Newman
