Letter to the Editor
Whilst I applaud Federal Treasure and Deputy Prime minister Wayne Swan’s decision to back Bob Katter’s plan ‘Big plans go west – study funded for dam, power and cane scheme.’TB 06.04.13. I must add that the best thing the Federal Treasurer could possibly do with the remaining $350 million to help each and every North Queenslander is to guide that money to Stage 11 of the Burdekin Falls Hydro Electricity Project and nudge Premier Newman to contribute the balance to provide clean, reliable low cost hydro power for North Queensland since the Copper String project went down. We will not see many other opportunities into the future to complete this project from the Hawke years which has stood half-done since 1987, due to a combination of both LNP and Labor ignorance at both State and Federal levels over the years.
Bob Katter is correct when he quotes Dr. John Bradfield who had so many ideas for North Queensland in those early days including the Burdekin Falls Dam. North Queensland certainly does need a boost from somewhere. Now that Queensland has announced that they were only kidding out our financial state of affairs, and have gone on to fund the 2018 Commonwealth Games for the Gold Coast, it seems only fair that North Queensland should see some of the action, or is it what we can come to expect from the Brisbane-centric Newman government.
I’m not sure that I like the involvement of Townsville Enterprise though, weren’t these the people who told us that we must have an $85 million cruise ship terminal, who, now, after near completion say it’s not good enough, after costing the community so much we find it will be yet another “white elephant.” Initiative, discretion and good judgments are required on projects such as these, I’m not sure Townsville Enterprise are up to the task.
