Letter to the Editor
Those who are expecting the continuation of Labor initiated schemes such as Gonski education reforms and the National Disability Insurance Scheme under an LNP government will be disappointed when they are either dropped or cut back to the bone, resembling nothing like the Labor envisaged proposals for raising the standard of education in Australia or caring for people with disability.
The coming federal budget will show a deficit of $20 Billion or more because revenue to the government has dried up, but Labor’ s top priority has always been people, whereas the LNP top priority has always been numbers. Although the last proposed LNP budget was $70 Billion short that would have to see a slash and burn approach to government services to get the numbers right.
The LNP will run hard this election trying to frighten the public about numbers that in reality are quite under control in this multi trillion dollar economy. If we were in debt to the tune of trillions like the USA or our numbers were tragic like Spain, then we would have something to be concerned about. Our government debt is around 10% of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is well under control. Inflation is low, unemployment is low 5.4%, and our economy is doing well compared to many overseas nations, while we have Prime Minister Gillard and Treasurer Swan managing it.
Fast forward to the day after the federal election if we woke up to find that Tony Abbott was Prime Minister and Joe Hockey was the Treasurer, what a continuing nightmare that would be, all the social gains as mentioned above gone, it would be a good day for numbers, sadly not for people.
