Letter to the Editor
Could someone please explain the reluctance to use the only piece of nation building infrastructure built in the 12 years of the Howard government for the transport of coal especially from the Galilee basin, that being the Adelaide to Darwin rail link. I refer to Irwin says dredging will damage reef TB 26.06.13.
Is cost the reason, if so I don’t understand why, as the town of Alpha sits far closer to the NT border than it does to Abbott Point. I noticed in yesterday’s news that Xstrata are sacking workers as demand for coal has weakened.
With the USA President Obama declaring today that climate change will be his top priority in his second term; it is difficult to see modern economies sticking with the 19th century technology of burning coal for much longer, it seems that the USA will finally fall into line with other progressive nations such as Australia and seek to use renewable, sustainable green power to move forward, this of course is great news for Earth’s survival.
